Plot summary
Aboard the shuttle Explorer, Dr. Ryan Stone is on her first mission in space, upgrading the Hubble Space Telescope under the veteran commander Matt Kowalski, who is making his final flight before retirement. Houston warns that a Russian satellite has been destroyed and that a cloud of debris is spreading, and orders the crew to return. The debris tears through the shuttle and rips Stone loose; Kowalski uses his maneuvering unit to pull her back, but the Explorer is wrecked and the two are left in orbit with dwindling oxygen. With the Explorer wrecked, they set out for the International Space Station, about 900 miles away, with roughly 90 minutes before the debris field circles back.

- Shots and blocking had to be planned well in advance so the camera robots could be programmed, which stretched the production to four and a half years; Alfonso Cuarón had initially assumed it would take about a year to complete the film after finishing the script.
- For most of her shots Sandra Bullock was placed inside a large mechanical rig with thousands of LED bulbs to simulate outer space; getting into the "lightbox" took so long that she stayed in it for up to 10 hours a day, communicating through a headset.
- Warner Bros started screening the film to test audiences well before it was finished, using crude animation instead of finished special effects, and the initial feedback asked for monsters or aliens to be added. Cuarón refused.
- Angelina Jolie was in contact with Warner Bros. in 2010 to star, but scheduling conflicts involving her Bosnian war film In the Land of Blood and Honey and a possible Salt sequel led her to end her involvement, and she declined again when approached a second time.
- Robert Downey Jr. entered discussions for the male lead in March 2010 but left that November to star in How to Talk to Girls; in December, with Bullock signed for the co-lead, George Clooney replaced him.
- In 2014 author Tess Gerritsen filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. for breach of contract, alleging that the film was an adaptation of her 1999 novel of the same name; the suit was dismissed twice in 2015.
- The landing scene was filmed at Lake Powell, Arizona, the same place where the astronauts' landing scene in Planet of the Apes (1968) was shot.
