Plot summary
In the Second Bug War, the United Citizen Federation battles the Arachnids across frontier worlds, and Colonel Johnny Rico is posted to the farming world Roku San. Sky Marshal Omar Anoke arrives there on a visit with General Dix Hauser, and the trip turns violent when Hauser fights anti-war farmers in a bar; Rico disarms the drunken general and faces a court martial. A Bug assault then knocks out the base defenses, and Rico takes command of the troops holding the outpost. Fleet Captain Lola Beck, Hauser's fiancée, is piloting Anoke to the Fleet's secret headquarters when the ship is damaged and six crew members, Anoke and herself among them, escape in a rescue pod to the classified planet OM-1. Admiral Enolo Phid keeps the pod's distress signal quiet, so Hauser turns to Rico and the Marauder program.

- Casper Van Dien returned as Johnny Rico in Starship Troopers 3, the only actor from any of the previous films to do so; he had wanted to come back for the 2004 second film, but director Phil Tippett went in a direction that did not include Rico.
- Digital effects supervisor Roger Nall led a team of about twenty-five people that made over 350 effects shots for the Arachnids alone; the Marauder armor sequence, which included actors stripping naked to be "bioscanned", needed about 100 distinct shots.
