Plot summary
Following a battle with Khan, the Enterprise returns to Earth with Spock dead and his casket on the Genesis planet. Starfleet plans to decommission the ship and forbids any travel to Genesis, which has become a political matter. Kirk wants to return for Spock's body. McCoy begins acting strangely and is detained after speaking about Genesis. Spock's father, Sarek, arrives and reveals that Spock's katra, his living spirit, resides in McCoy, and that both McCoy and Spock's body must be brought to Vulcan for final rites. When Starfleet refuses permission, Kirk and his officers plot to steal the Enterprise. Meanwhile, the Klingon commander Kruge learns of Genesis and sets course for the planet, intending to seize its power.

- Set designer Cameron Birnie said security on the production was highly unusual: sets were built out of sequence, the crew were given only as many pages as they needed to fabricate each locale, guards checked staff identification cards, and “Trois” was written as a code word in place of the film's name.
- Production was temporarily shut down after a fire destroyed several soundstages at Paramount Studios, one of them next to the set for the Genesis planet. The set's pyrotechnics were suspected at first, but the cause was ruled to be arson; Shatner was among the cast members who grabbed fire hoses to stop the flames.
- Leonard Nimoy directed this film, becoming the first Star Trek cast member to direct one of the films.

Bennett started writing the script with the ending, where Spock says “Your name is... Jim”, and worked backwards from that point through the rest of the story.- Dame Judith Anderson accepted the role of T'Lar, the Vulcan high priestess who restores Spock's katra, at age 87 at her nephew's urging. She claimed to be 5 ft tall, but her true height was closer to 4 ft, a problem when the designers needed to make her look appropriately regal.
- Bennett decided not to include the character Carol, primarily for budgetary reasons and because he could not reconcile how she would not know of her son's unethical use of unstable protomatter in the Genesis matrix, or that she would have condoned it.
