James Sikking
Biography
James Sikking was an American actor whose screen career spanned six decades. Born in Los Angeles, he studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating in 1959. His first film was Roger Corman's Five Guns West (1955), and he went on to appear in The Strangler (1964), Point Blank (1967), Charro! (1969), The Electric Horseman (1979), and Capricorn One (1978). He became best known as Lieutenant Howard Hunter on Hill Street Blues, which ran from 1981 to 1987 and brought him an Emmy nomination in 1984. Steven Bochco later cast him as Dr. David Howser on Doogie Howser, M.D. He also played Captain Stan Jonas on Brooklyn South, winning a People's Choice Award in 1998. Later film work included Narrow Margin (1990), Final Approach (1991), The Pelican Brief (1993), and Made of Honor (2008).

Getting ready for a role
Sikking was in college during the Korean War and served in the U.S. Army. For his Hill Street Blues character, he drew on a drill sergeant he remembered from basic training at Fort Bragg.

Sikking's first film was Roger Corman's Five Guns West in 1955, where he played a Union Sergeant in an uncredited role.
A change of course
While he was at UCLA, Sikking worked at the Central Stage, the university's production program, and also as a lifeguard for Los Angeles County to cover his college costs.
