Plot summary
The Monestier money comes from the stock exchange, and Cynthia Monestier has just put a large share of it into an oil concession in South America that her husband is certain is worthless. Rather than accept the loss, Léonard looks for a buyer and settles on Antoine Brévin, a naive millionaire and a friend of the family who is eager to marry Patricia, Léonard's daughter. Patricia will not have him. She talks Simon Guilbaud, the man who delivers cars, into posing as her husband, and the household only learns of the marriage after Antoine has been invited to the house. Léonard then plans to use Simon a second time, as Paul, the son who is away in South America.
