Plot summary
Bomba, a scientist, has spent years trying to prove that the Leafmen exist: tiny humanoid soldiers who guard the neighboring forest from the Boggans. His seventeen-year-old daughter Mary Katherine comes to live with him and dismisses his research as nonsense. In the forest, the young Leafman Nod quits, angering his leader Ronin, and Queen Tara goes to a pool of lily pods to name her successor. The Boggans attack; Tara flees with the chosen pod and Mandrake gives chase. Mary Katherine, leaving home after an argument with her father, finds the wounded queen, who shrinks her with magic and gives her the pod, telling her to bring it to Nim Galuu. Ronin, the slug Mub, the snail Grub and a reluctant Nod set out with her.

- Chris Wedge got permission to find a new home for his Leaf Men film and turned to Pixar, led by his Tron colleague John Lasseter; Pixar tried to close the rights, which would have been its first adaptation of an existing work, until Fox changed its mind and kept the film.
- Director Chris Wedge was unhappy that the studio's marketing department chose the final title Epic, and he also objected to foreign subtitles such as the French one, The Battle of the Secret Kingdom.
