Plot summary
In Toronto, Catherine Stewart works as a gynecologist and her husband, David, teaches at a college. Their teenage son, Michael, a music student, no longer confides in her; she learns he is sexually active only by catching him in the act. Michael talks to his father instead, and David tells Catherine nothing about Michael's life. Catherine still loves David, though the marriage has lost much of its romance. Evidence, all of it circumstantial, points to David as a chronic philanderer, most recently during a speaking trip to New York City. She sees Chloe through her office window going into an upscale bar nearby and takes her for a prostitute. Catherine hires Chloe to find David at a place he often goes, pass as a student, flirt with him, and report back. She is not to take things further.

- During filming, Liam Neeson's wife was badly hurt in a skiing accident; he left the set to be with her and she died from her injuries days later, and he returned to finish his remaining scenes only a few days after her death, shooting them in two days.
- Amanda Seyfried only ended up playing Chloe because a friend who had been considered for the part dropped out over discomfort with the film's nudity, and producer Jason Reitman then persuaded Seyfried to take it.
- Chloe marked a first for Atom Egoyan: it was the first film from the director that he had not also written himself, after a career of filming his own screenplays.
- Director Atom Egoyan insisted on shooting Chloe on 35 mm film, a time-consuming and labor-intensive process that he enjoys; his cinematographer Paul Sarossy saw the choice as symbolic, an escape from digital electronics in a digital age.
