Plot summary
School is out, and Penny Cooper is headed to Northwestern. Movies were how she got close to her mother, a Hollywood actress. Her boyfriend, Johnny Sanders Jr., is still grieving his father when a friend asks him to house-sit a beach house. Johnny invites Penny and her cousin Camilla. Camilla sees a man swimming nude at night. He is Ash Baker, a country singer who walked away from his agency rather than let it remake his image. In the morning a lifeguard, Steve Galmarini, tries to fine Ash for camping on the beach, and the group asks him to stay at the house. A surfing lesson with Steve follows, and that night the group bonds, Penny and Ash especially. Johnny rides off alone to surf at night, still upset about his father.
