Plot summary
Fourteen-year-old Melinda Sordino starts her freshman year at high school with no friends and almost no voice. Since a summer party where she called the police, classmates call her a squealer; only a new acquaintance, Heather, and her lab partner, Dave Petrakis, offer any company. Her parents, noticing failing grades, push her toward her history teacher, Mr. Neck, while her art teacher, Mr. Freeman, gives her a space to work. Melinda hides the reason she stopped speaking: a senior named Andy Evans assaulted her at that party. When her former best friend, Rachel Bruin, begins dating Andy, Melinda watches with fear for what Rachel cannot see.

- Speak was shot in 21 days in August 2003 on a budget of $1 million. Flooding during an especially heavy summer rain postponed filming, and during the delay author Laurie Halse Anderson visited the set with her daughter; Anderson also cameos as the lunch lady who gives Melinda the mashed potatoes.
- Producer and screenwriter Annie Young Frisbie read the novel and made a successful bid for the rights to a film version, and production took place in Columbus, Ohio because a production partner, Matthew Myers, was relocating there with his wife.
