Ernest Shackleton
Biography
Sir Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish Antarctic explorer and one of the leading figures of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Born in Kilkea, County Kildare, he left school at sixteen to go to sea and qualified as a master mariner in 1898, later joining the Union-Castle Line. His first polar experience came when he served as third officer under Robert Falcon Scott on the Discovery expedition, which ran from 1901 to 1904. On the Nimrod Expedition of 1907 to 1909, he and three companions reached 88 degrees 23 minutes south, a new Farthest South record and the biggest advance toward the pole yet achieved, and he was knighted on his return. He then planned the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914 to 1917; after his ship was trapped and sank in the Weddell Sea in November 1915, he led his crew to Elephant Island and on to South Georgia, his most famous exploit. He died in 1922.
