Plot summary

Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd set out for the South Pole in 1928 on his first expedition, working from a base named Little America in Antarctica. The film follows the party he took with him: an aviation pilot, a topographer, an aviation mechanic, a supply officer, a medical officer, a fireman, dog drivers and a seaman who drives a tractor. It is a part-talkie, so music and sound effects carry most of the soundtrack, with narration read over them and some English intertitles. The cinematography took the prize at the third Academy Awards, the first documentary to win an Oscar.
