Plot summary
James Sveck has just graduated from high school in New York City, where his divorced parents and his older sister Gillian, busy writing a memoir, live. The plan everyone holds for him is college, and it is the first thing he refuses. He goes looking for insight in places other than the ones the adults around him propose, turning to a life coach named Rowena Adler, to his grandmother Nanette and to people outside the family. James reads the world sharply but has no idea how to take part in it, and the summer before college is the time he sets aside to work that out.
