Veronica Lake
Biography
Veronica Lake was an American actress who worked in film, stage and television and was best known for playing femmes fatales in 1940s film noir, usually alongside Alan Ladd, and for the peek-a-boo hairstyle that began by accident during a take. Born in Brooklyn, she first appeared on screen in small RKO parts before producer Arthur Hornblow Jr. cast her in I Wanted Wings and gave her the new name. Important roles followed in Sullivan's Travels (1941), This Gun for Hire (1942), The Glass Key (1942) and I Married a Witch (1942), and she drew acclaim as a nurse in So Proudly We Hail (1943). She starred in the noir The Blue Dahlia (1946), the largest success of her career, and the Western Ramrod (1947). She later wrote a memoir, acted on stage, and made her last film, Flesh Feast (1970); footage of her appeared in Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982).

About the name
Hornblow gave the actress the name Veronica Lake. Her eyes, which he described as "calm and clear like a blue lake", were what inspired him to choose it.
First role
Lake's first screen appearance was as an extra in Sorority House (1939), but her small part as a student was cut from the film; she was still encouraged to continue acting.
Beyond film
Lake played Blanche DuBois in a 1969 English stage revival of A Streetcar Named Desire, and her performance won rave reviews.
