Plot summary
Kim Jun-shik lives in Gyeong-seong under Japanese rule and works the Hasegawa family's farm with his father and his sister Eun-soo. He and the family's son, Tatsuo Hasegawa, both take up marathon running, and as teenagers the two are fierce competitors. Korean and Japanese tensions flare further after the Korean runner Sohn Kee-chung wins a marathon against Japanese rivals. Ten years later, in 1938, Koreans are barred from sports events and Jun-shik pulls a rickshaw for a living while Tatsuo, a Japanese nationalist, is set on running in the All Japan Trials. Jun-shik enters the race with Sohn's quiet backing, and when it ends in a riot, the men blamed for the disorder are conscripted into the Imperial Japanese Army, Jun-shik among them along with his friend Lee Jong-dae.
