Plot summary
In 1990, Somalia's civil war pits the Barre government against rebels under Mohamed Farrah Aidid, and both Korean embassies in Mogadishu are lobbying for Somali backing of their countries' bids to enter the United Nations. South Korean ambassador Han Shin-sung and his North Korean counterpart Rim Yong-soo are rivals in that contest, and Aidid's fighters pressure embassies that will not support them. When the fighting reaches the capital, the South Korean staff and families are cut off, and the North Koreans, unable to reach the airport without official papers, take shelter at the South Korean compound. Suspicion runs both ways between the guests and their hosts, and with the Americans and Chinese already gone, the two ambassadors agree to approach their remaining allies.

- Escape from Mogadishu is based on the 2006 novel Escape, a fictionalized account by Kang Shin-sung, South Korea's former ambassador to Somalia, about the 1991 incident in which the South Korean embassy in Mogadishu sheltered its North Korean counterparts before all fled to Kenya. Director Ryoo Seung-wan also partly based his script on records kept by the US embassy in Somalia.
