Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Aaron Paul said he recorded himself "getting severely intoxicated" and studied the footage to learn how to act drunk, while Mary Elizabeth Winstead used Ivana Chubbuck's method from the book The Power of the Actor; the two also got drunk together the night before filming, which Winstead called "very messy".
- Some of the story's details came from Susan Burke's own experience: she was a heavy drinker until she was 24, when she started attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and she wrote about a young woman deciding to become sober because she felt that experience had not been represented on film before.
