Plot summary

Peter keeps a lighthouse on the coast, where he raises Nemo alone and fills her nights with tales of his adventures alongside Flip. During a storm he goes out to aid a boat in trouble, and Carla, a friend of the family, comes to tell Nemo he is lost at sea. Carla talks Nemo's estranged uncle, Philip, a doorknob salesman, into taking her in, and she moves to the city, where school is a struggle. One night the stuffed pig she sleeps with moves on its own, and she finds herself in Slumberland, the world between dreams. Flip is there, an outlaw she had believed was invented, and he is after a map that leads to pearls able to grant wishes. Nemo locates it while awake and goes with him, hoping for a way to see her father.
