Plot summary
Monica Reeves, a high school senior, is running for prom queen and weighing MIT against a state university. She spent the day before prom preparing to save time, but on the big day she wakes with hair she cannot control, her dress destroyed and her shoes broken. At her door comes Liz Morgan, who says she is an FBI agent and wants the diamond necklace Monica bought at an antique shop, which Liz hopes will win back her job. Monica bargains for a ride around town, a repaired hairdo, a new outfit and driving lessons, offering the necklace in return. Pierce Peters, a jewel thief, wants the same diamond for a buyer.

- Leigh-Allyn Baker chose to executive produce the film because it was Disney Channel's first movie built around an adult lead, and she wanted that role and the project's creative direction protected.
- Laura Marano said that unlike her regular series Austin & Ally, which used four cameras and shot about ten scenes a day, this film used fewer cameras and fewer scenes, with one scene alone taking an entire day to shoot.
