Plot summary
Tara Reedy and her mother Joleen are thrown out of the house they shared with Joleen's boyfriend after he is arrested for growing marijuana. Joleen begs her younger brother James, who works on a road-building crew, to take them in. Soon after they move into his apartment, Joleen leaves with a truck driver. James misses enough days of work that he is fired, and Tara is placed in a foster home while he sleeps in the basement of his married friend Randall. Tara complains that other children at the foster home torment her, and she wants James to take her away. James drives her toward his father's farm, a place he and Joleen never meant to see again, and the two agree to pose as father and daughter on the road.
