Plot summary
Ray Joshua has a gift for poetry and wants to be a rapper, but he lives in Dodge City, a Southeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood where gang wars and drug dealing shape daily life. When a drug deal goes wrong, his friend Big Mike is shot, and Ray is arrested. He is taken to the District of Columbia's central detention facility and charged with possession of a controlled substance; bail is set at $10,000. His public defender presents three options: plead guilty, stand trial, or serve as an informant. Inside, the pressure to join a drug culture mirrors the outside, and the gangs Thug Life and the Union both want him. Ray refuses to take sides, and he joins a writing class taught by Lauren Bell.
