Plot summary
Ross Ulbricht is an aspiring entrepreneur in Austin, Texas, who wants to challenge government control. He launches Silk Road, an anonymous darknet marketplace where illegal goods are bought and sold with cryptocurrency, and the site flourishes. Julia puts him in touch with someone at Gawker, and attention to the site grows. Rick Bowden, a DEA agent, returns to work after a required stay in rehab for drug abuse. With almost no feel for technology, he is reassigned to the cybercrimes unit and told to keep quiet for nine months until he can retire on a full pension. He registers on Silk Road as an ordinary user and digs into the site, but his findings are dismissed by superiors and by younger colleagues who mock his methods.
