Plot summary
Nell and Simon open their country estate every Christmas for their old school friends and their partners. This year the guests wear formal clothes and the children may swear. A cloud of poisonous gas is killing most life on Earth, and small green tornadoes come before it. Ahead of the cloud reaching Britain, the government has given suicide pills to the population, but not to the homeless or to people living in the country illegally. Nell, Simon and their friends have agreed to take the pills, and the children are to take them too. James accepts the plan; his young wife Sophie has just learned she is pregnant and is unsure whether to take hers.
