Plot summary
In Fort Chicken, Illinois, a chicken carrying a mutant virus is turned into a batch of chicken nuggets and delivered to Fort Chicken Elementary. Fourth-grader Shelly Linker eats one and contracts the virus. Meanwhile, aspiring horror writer Clint Hadson has come from New York to substitute at the school, where he reunites with Lucy McCormick, his former high school crush, who dates Wade Johnson, a physical education teacher. During Clint's class, Shelly, now blistered and feral, attacks a bully named Patriot; Clint is scratched before she flees. The infection spreads through the playground, turning most of the children into aggressive attackers. The teachers and other staff members are left trapped inside the school with the infected students.
