Plot summary
A tech billionaire brings Dr. Annika Kask, a computer scientist known for her astrophysics work, to his private facility on a Caribbean island, where a secret research project is under way. The project is built around LITTLEMOUTH, a device designed by the physicist Perry Glassner to reach extraterrestrial intelligence. Annika joins the team as it sends signals off the planet and receives answers in return, and the researchers come to believe they have made the first contact between humanity and another civilization. What answers them keeps them guessing, since they cannot tell whether the intelligence means well, means harm, or lies past what people can grasp.
