Plot summary
Jabez Stone is a writer in Manhattan who cannot sell his novels, lives in a lousy apartment and has no luck with women. His friend Julius Jensen sells a novel to an editor for $190,000, and envy takes hold of Jabez. A beautiful stranger then offers him fame and fortune in return for his soul. Having lost faith in himself, Jabez agrees to the bargain.

- Financing collapsed on Alec Baldwin's directorial debut when backers' problems brought in the F.B.I., leaving the film never properly completed; Baldwin removed his name as director and called for a boycott, but stayed credited as one of 17 producers.
- Baldwin said the movie was taken from him during post-production because some of its investors were being investigated for bank fraud, and after he removed his director credit, his name was replaced in the opening credits by the pseudonym "Harry Kirkpatrick."
