Plot summary

In 1624 the shogun Tokugawa Hidetada dies suddenly, and the suicide of his food taster raises the suspicion of poison. Iemitsu, the elder son, had been named heir, but his father disliked the birthmark on his face and his stammer and preferred the popular Tadanaga. The court splits: Hidetada's widow and Chief Chamberlain Doi favor Tadanaga, while Chamberlain Matsudaira and Lady Kasuga, who leads the harem, hold for Iemitsu, and nobles such as Sanjo Saneeda and Ayamaro Karasumasu see a chance to topple the shogunate. Yagyu Munenori, Iemitsu's fencing instructor, works to secure his student the succession and calls home Jubei, a son who has been living among the Negoro. Hayate and Mon, Negoro fighters, want back the Yamato Province lands their people lost twenty years earlier.
