Plot summary
Gomyo Kiyoemon, an aging boss in the yakuza of late eighteenth-century Japan, runs a lantern and silk dyeing business and also moves as a figure of the underworld, where the affairs of a rival clan have his attention. His wife tries to keep hold of something he is ready to let go. A samurai who remembers nothing of his own past crosses his path; struck by how the man kills, Kiyoemon gives him the name Yataro Tanigawa and keeps him on as a bodyguard while feuds between clans run their course. Tanigawa's standing in the household climbs quickly, and the enemies pressing on his master come to look like more than one sword can answer.
