Plot summary
Rose Nemser is a student, and she is enthralled by the writing of Shirley Jackson, whose dark story "The Lottery" shocked readers. Rose's husband Fred has taken a teaching post at Bennington College under Shirley's husband, Stanley Hyman. When the couples meet, Shirley asks Rose about a pregnancy Rose has not yet announced. Shirley has stopped writing, and Stanley arranges for Rose to help in the house, so the Nemsers move in and Rose takes on the household. Shirley treats her with contempt, then begins a new book drawn from Paula Jean Welden, a young woman who vanished from the campus, and pulls Rose into her research. Stanley presses Shirley to keep working.
