Plot summary
Sherry Swanson leaves prison after three years and comes back to New Jersey, a recovering heroin addict who wants to raise Alexis, the daughter she left behind. Bobby, her brother, and his wife Lynette have brought the girl up, and the child hardly knows her. Lynette doubts Sherry is fit to be a mother, and Sherry's return has strained the household. Sherry lives in a halfway house whose curfew cuts into her visits to the family, reports to a parole officer, and works at a youth center. She attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to hold her addiction in check, and there she meets Dean, another addict.
