Plot summary
In August 1943, WAAF Flight Officer Maude Garrett carries a top secret package from Auckland to Samoa aboard an American B-17. The crew receives her with derision, and she spends takeoff alone in the ball turret. The one friendly man aboard, dorsal gunner Walter Quaid, keeps her valise. Maude reports another aircraft up in the clouds; navigator Finch confirms it, but pilot Reeves and co-pilot Williams question whether she can identify planes. From the turret she sees a winged creature gripping the wing, and tail gunner Beckell sees it too.

- In April 2019, Chloë Grace Moretz announced the script of Shadow in the Cloud had been rewritten several times after sexual assault allegations against screenwriter Max Landis. Landis was removed as producer and director Roseanne Liang rewrote the film, but Writers Guild of America rules still give him the screenplay credit.
- In Max Landis's original script, Moretz's character was named Maude Gardner after a woman he was acquainted with when he wrote it. The surname was changed for legal reasons, and the cast and crew, not knowing the original namesake, unanimously settled on Garrett.
