Plot summary
Franck Poupart works on commission as a door-to-door salesman in the outskirts of Paris, going home to a rundown apartment and his depressed wife Jeanne. He drinks heavily and has frequent mood swings. A man named Tikides owes him money, so he calls at the home of an elderly woman, who buys a dressing gown and offers him her underage niece Mona instead. Mona takes him to her room and undresses; he holds back and leaves. He comes home to another argument with Jeanne and pushes her, dressed, into a bath of water, and she leaves. His boss, who knows Franck has been cheating him, has him arrested. The next day a young woman pays the debt, and Franck learns it was Mona. He goes to thank her and asks where the money came from.

Patrick Dewaere was so shaken after filming the scene in which his character Franck strangles his wife Jeanne that he told friends, "but do you realize that today I killed someone? It is not nothing to kill someone".- Director Alain Corneau wanted Patrick Dewaere for Franck Poupart so badly that he would have given up the film had the actor refused, and Dewaere called him the same evening to say he absolutely wanted the role.
- Patrick Dewaere was so obsessed with his character that he stole a gray raincoat from the Paris shop Tati de Barbès as he walked through the district, thinking it would be perfect for the part.
- Patrick Dewaere asked the director to be ready to shoot the scene in which his character bangs his head on a car, filmed in a vacant lot one morning at minus fifteen degrees, and refused a stuntman to avoid retakes.
- Alain Corneau shot with two or three cameras under very little lighting, the cinematographer Pierre-William Glenn using more sensitive film than normal, and recorded sound live with wireless high-frequency microphones worn by the actors.
- Dewaere respected Bernard Blier too much to slap him in the face for the final scene, but Blier insisted, forcing Dewaere to slap him for real.
