Plot summary
Commissaire Jean Letellier is in difficulty before the Minos case even begins. The gangster Marcucci got away from him in front of onlookers, and a passerby died when a bullet went astray in the course of the chase; Letellier is the officer being investigated for firing it. Before he is cleared, young women in Paris begin to die. The man telephones them at night and insults the lives they lead, and at each scene he leaves an odd message signed Minos, a name drawn from the Divine Comedy, declaring that the victim was punished for a way of life he judges impure. Letellier and Inspector Moissac have no trace of him to follow.
