Plot summary
Harvey and Kate Holroyd live in Marin County, California, where Kate and her friends have taken up the sexual revolution and psychobabble while Harvey resists all of it. He is losing his patience and going through a mid-life crisis. He and Kate no longer seem to sleep together. Harvey wants a better-paying job and works with the corporate recruiter Luckman. His best friend Sam has marital troubles, and Sam and his wife Angela also seem to have stopped sleeping together; Sam blames Harvey's mood on a lack of sex. Harvey's daughter Joanie, a teenager, is being lured toward a cult that sells flowers, and Stella, his new secretary, makes advances he tries to avoid.

- Producer Sidney Beckerman cast 20 couples from a nearby nudist colony for an orgy scene in Serial, and the scene ended up being filmed at Paramount Studios.
- Filmmaker Gary Weis was originally hired to direct Serial but was replaced by Bill Persky in May 1979 because of "creative differences."
- Martin Mull tried ad-libbing scenes in Serial, but Bill Persky reminded him that his funny bits were "Martin Mull, not Harvey Holroyd"; one ad lib kept in the film has him telling a secretary he might hire that it is fine if she can not take dictation more than 40 words a minute.
