Biography

Barbara Rhoades is an American actress known mainly for comedy and mystery roles, most famously the lady bandit Penelope, called Bad Penny, in The Shakiest Gun in the West (1968) opposite Don Knotts. Born in Poughkeepsie in 1947, she began acting in the late 1960s and signed an exclusive contract with Universal Pictures in 1967. She took guest parts on many television series and appeared in films including There Was a Crooked Man... (1970), Up the Sandbox (1972), Scream Blacula Scream (1973), The Goodbye Girl (1977) and First Born (2007), and played a police officer in The Choirboys. She was a regular on the sitcom Busting Loose as Melody Feebeck and had recurring roles on Soap and One Life to Live. Earlier she spent 18 months on Broadway in the musical Funny Girl.

In the musical Funny Girl (1964), Rhoades played a showgirl on Broadway for 18 months. Summer stock productions at the Cecilwood Theater in Fishkill, New York, gave her further stage experience.
