Plot summary
Selah Summers is a senior at Haldwell Boarding School in Pennsylvania, where she runs the Spades, one of five student factions, and deals drugs through an operation she built with her right-hand man, Maxxie. The Spades have not chosen anyone to take over when she graduates. A transfer student, Paloma, photographs Selah at Spirit Squad practice, and Selah sees her talent; she sends Paloma to photograph her rival Bobby, who leads the Bobbies, cheating with Two Tom, who leads the Prefects. That work puts Paloma at the center of the rivalry between the factions. Tarit, who leads the Sea, tells Selah there may be a rat in her ranks. Selah's mother calls her home to confront her about an unanswered college acceptance letter.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Tayarisha Poe, inspired by the film La Jetée, first told Selah's story as an "overture": a nonlinear website of short stories, short films, music and photographs launched online in 2014, which drew the attention of filmmaker Terence Nance before she reshaped it into a feature.
- Cinematographer Jomo Fray said the film's visual style was inspired by Rihanna's album Anti, and handheld camera shots were used more and more toward the end of the film to represent Selah's gradual loss of power.
