Scribe (2016) on Netflix

Plot summary

Two years after losing his job to alcoholism, Duval attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and becomes friends with Sara, who is also recovering. At a funeral he runs into De Grugy, a former business acquaintance, who puts him forward to Clément. Clément runs a private surveillance company and offers Duval well-paid work transcribing telephone intercepts from cassette tapes. The conditions are strict: he works alone in an unfurnished apartment from nine to six on an old typewriter, cannot smoke, cannot leave during working hours, cannot speak to anyone in the building, must shred pages with mistakes, and must tell no one what he does. His pay comes in cash. France is nearing a presidential election, and a hostage crisis involving French citizens is under way in the Middle East.
