Plot summary
Tom Ricks, an American writer, comes to Paris to live near his young daughter, who stays with his ex-wife; the divorce followed his mental illness. After his belongings and money are stolen, he takes a night guard's job at a run-down hostel owned by Sezer, a local crime boss. The post is a basement office where he admits only visitors who arrive with the correct password, and he hopes the quiet nights will let him work on his novel. He starts a romance with Margit, an elegant widow who will see him only at her home in the fifth arrondissement, twice a week, and who forbids questions about her work and her past. At the hostel café he grows close to Ania, a Polish barmaid with literary interests who looks for a copy of his only published novel.
