Plot summary
Christmas Moultrie, at ninety-five, recalls the years he spent with Ward Allen in Savannah, Georgia, at the start of the twentieth century. Ward grows up with privilege in the mid-1800s but turns away from it for market duck hunting on the river, and his drinking brings him before Judge Harden more than once. Christmas, once enslaved, hunts alongside him. Ward's way with words wins Lucy Stubbs, who marries him against her father's wishes, though Mr. Stubbs wants the wealthy Sir Graham for her. Ward's shotgun keeps the city's markets in fowl, and he presses his claim to hunt as he sees fit.
