Plot summary
Barbara Daly marries above her class when she takes Brooks Baekeland, the son of the family that made its fortune in Bakelite plastics, as her husband. Brooks is a remote and wealthy man, and their only child, Antony, grows up a disappointment to his father. Barbara is mentally unstable, lonely and unhappy in the marriage, and she dotes on her son instead. Antony is diagnosed with schizophrenia, and his homosexuality troubles his mother as he grows from a boy into a young man. Mother and son stay close to each other, and Barbara has no one else she holds to.
