Plot summary
Adolescent Sadie lives in a trailer park with her mother, Rae, while her father serves as a soldier. He has been gone four years and has just reenlisted, and the two write to each other by hand every couple of weeks. Sadie wants her parents back together when he returns. Rae's disappointment over the separation seems to be only for her daughter's sake. Carla has been her closest friend for twenty years, and Carla's son Francis and father Deak are Sadie's own two best friends. Deak is always ready to listen, and Sadie watches out for Francis, who is bullied at school. Rae has mostly given up on her husband yet stayed loyal. Bradley, a friend and Sadie's school counselor, hopes for more, but she wants only friendship from him. The new neighbor, Cyrus, tempts her instead.
