Walter Cronkite

Biography

Walter Cronkite was an American broadcast journalist who anchored the CBS Evening News from 1962 until 1981 and was often called the most trusted man in America after an opinion poll gave him that name. Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, he left college in 1935 to report news and sports, announced radio for a station in Oklahoma City, and joined United Press in 1937, later covering World War II battles in North Africa and Europe and the Nuremberg trials. Recruited to CBS News in 1950 by Edward R. Murrow, he hosted You Are There and The Twentieth Century before becoming the network's evening news anchor. He reported the assassination of President Kennedy, the Vietnam War, and the space program through the Moon landings, and ended his newscasts with a signature closing phrase and the date. His honors included an Emmy, two Peabody Awards, a George Polk Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

On March 1, 2006, Cronkite became the first person who was not an astronaut to receive NASA's Ambassador of Exploration Award.
Getting ready for a role
Cronkite trained himself to deliver his newscasts at 124 words per minute so viewers could understand him, far slower than the American average of about 165 words per minute.
First role
While he was attending UT, Cronkite acted in a play for the first time, sharing the stage with Eli Wallach, another student.
A role that slipped away
Cronkite made the shortlist for NASA's Journalist in Space program, which was modeled on the Teacher in Space Project. That chance ended when the Challenger disaster happened in 1986.
