Plot summary
In September 1983, Stanislav Petrov, a former lieutenant colonel in the Soviet Air Defense Forces, is the duty officer at the Serpukhov-15 bunker outside Moscow, the command center of the Soviet early warning satellite system, when its computers report that American missiles are heading toward the Soviet Union. Re-enactments of those hours in 1983 are interwoven with present-day footage of Petrov. The film follows Petrov's 2006 trip to the United States with his interpreter Galina, which takes in the United Nations and the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. The making of the film takes more than a decade, partly because Petrov, an ex-soldier, is reluctant to open up about his personal feelings.

- Peter Anthony spent over a decade making his documentary about Stanislav Petrov, a slow process because Petrov was reluctant to open up; Anthony said that in Petrov's day, disclosing unauthorised information could still send a man to the gulag, and the ex-soldier had no interest in discussing his personal feelings.
