Vladimir Menshov
Biography
Vladimir Menshov was a Russian director and actor who trained at VGIK, the state film school, in both acting and directing, and became known for his depictions of working class life and the Russian Everyman. He was born in Baku in 1939. His second feature, Moscow Does Not Believe In Tears (1979), won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, though he did not attend the ceremony. The comedy of manners Love and Pigeons (1985), about a rural farmer who falls for a glamorous city woman, kept his career going. After a decade away from directing, he returned in 1995 with What a Mess!, a long satire, and followed it with the nostalgic drama The Envy of Gods in 2000. His filmography as an actor was larger than his directing work, and ordinary cinema-goers loved him while some critics found his films too simple. He died in 2021.
