Plot summary
Near the end of the Soviet state, Babylen Tatarsky and his generation of Young Pioneers received a bottle of Russian-made Pepsi, which stood for the hope that a magical new life would come from across the ocean. In the early 1990s Tatarsky is a frustrated poet in post-communist Moscow. He takes work writing advertising copy and finds he has a gift for giving Western-style ads a distinctively Russian twist. He was named in honor of Lenin, and the advertising business he has joined is new to the city.

- Director Victor Ginzburg began adapting Victor Pelevin's 1999 novel in 2006, but the Russian film industry gave limited backing, government subsidy applications were rejected and television networks were skeptical, so Ginzburg raised the $7 million budget himself. Funding shortages halted production three times, including during the 2008 financial crisis, stretching the production timeline to five years (2006–2011).
