Plot summary
Pavel Fedorovich Golikov works at a research institute where every colleague is a woman, and at over forty he is still single and uneasy around women. He lives with his parents, Fedor Mikhailovich and Yelena Arkadyevna, who introduce him to the unmarried daughters of their friends in the hope that he will marry. His cousin Gena comes to Moscow to buy furniture, cheerful and reckless, and stays at the parents' request until he has found Pavel a wife. Gena puts his relative in a new suit and takes him out to meet women. Their opening line is the question "Where is the nofelet?", a word that reads "telephone" backwards. Pavel keeps thinking about a woman he passes each day on the bus.
