Plot summary
In Moscow the truce between the Light Others and the Dark holds, and Anton Gorodetsky works for the Night Watch. He trains Svetlana, a nurse who has become aware of her powers, and he destroys evidence of the attacks on non-Others made by his son Yegor, who has joined the Day Watch. Anton also hunts the Chalk of Fate, an artifact once owned by Tamerlane that can rewrite history. Zavulon, the Day Watch's leader, works to frame Anton for the killing of several Dark Others. To protect him, Geser, who heads the Night Watch, has Anton switch bodies with the sorceress Olga and orders Svetlana to stay with him.
