Plot summary
Vyacheslav Kolotilov, called Slava, teaches natural science in Palchiki, a coastal village on the Caspian. He travels to Moscow with the manuscript of his first novel, hoping to make his name as a writer, and while he is there a car driven by Nadezhda strikes him in the street. She is engaged to Danil, but she and Slava fall for each other, and they agree to marry. Slava has to give up his teaching post and move to the capital before the wedding. On the day of his train the Russian Youth Football Cup is being prepared, and a Duma deputy mistakes him for a team's coach and takes his passport. Khlobustin, coach of Central Moscow, tells him the surest way out is to let his players lose, so Slava gathers a squad of local delinquents.
