Plot summary
The Moscow plant sends its engineer Alexei Varakin to a small unnamed town to agree on the dimensions of a mechanical part with the local factory. At the plant his pass is missing. Inside, the director's secretary works without clothes, and no one reacts. The director does not yet know that his chief engineer has died. In an empty restaurant Varakin is offered a cake baked in the shape of his own head and refuses it; the cook, who takes the refusal badly, kills himself. After giving his statement, Varakin tries to go home, but every train ticket is sold out. His pleas to return to Moscow meet no answer.
