Valentine Dyall
Biography
Valentine Dyall was an English character actor whose harsh, deep voice made him a regular presence in voice work. Born in London, he was the son of actor Franklin Dyall and actress and author Mary Phyllis Joan Logan. He became known as The Man in Black for his narration of Appointment with Fear, a BBC radio horror series, and later took the same role in a 1950 Hammer film of the same name. His film credits included The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), Brief Encounter (1945), The City of the Dead (1960), and The Haunting (1963). Science fiction fans knew him as Gargravarr in The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy (1981) and as the Black Guardian in Doctor Who, while he was a regular in the BBC drama Secret Army. He also appeared on stage, including in Joe Orton's What the Butler Saw, and in radio and television productions. He died in 1985.

A first
Dyall's busiest time on screen came in the late 1940s, when he made 12 films in 1949 alone. His parts that year ranged from leads in Doctor Morelle and Vengeance Is Mine to bit parts.
Beyond film
Dyall and Dusty Springfield shared hosting duties on the BBC music variety show Decidedly Dusty in 1969. No complete episode of that series has survived.
