Mavis Villiers
Biography
Mavis Villiers was an Australian-born British actress who worked in theater, film and television. Born in Sydney, she moved with her family to Hollywood as a child in 1921 and began acting in the silent era; her first credited screen role came in the 1927 short comedy The Bum's Rush. After settling in London in 1933 she built a stage career, appearing in a 1957 West End run of Damn Yankees and playing Mrs Van Mier in the 1962 Savoy Theatre production of Noël Coward's Sail Away. Her only Broadway appearance was as Aunt Lizzy Sweeney in the first Broadway staging of Brian Friel's Philadelphia, Here I Come! in 1966, and she repeated the part in the 1975 film version, her last role before her death. Her films included Suddenly, Last Summer (1959) and Victim (1961), and she had numerous television roles between 1938 and 1972.

Villiers had only one role on the American Broadway stage. In 1966, she was Aunt Lizzy Sweeney in the first Broadway production of Brian Friel's Philadelphia Here I Come!, staged at the Helen Hayes Theatre.
